Rancho Life – June – whoopsie doodle – part II
Part II must turn in to a quick summing up because it is already August and I seriously need to catch up. I mean, really, it’s so much easier to write ‘in the moment’ … right? So! Here goes!
I hung out in the kitchen with Xinia quite a bit for the first 2 months so I could improve my Spanish and learn how the kitchen is run. Xinia is great! We get along quite well. Aaaand, my Spanish is improving. It is definitely better than when I first arrived but I seriously desire to become fluent at a much quicker rate. Therefore, I’m going to take some lessons from Xinia’s husband, Hilario, who speaks much more English than Xinia does. I think he wants to improve his English as well so maybe we can help each other out. I’ll keep you posted.
The surfing label, Lightning Bolt, was here for about 10 days in June. This was the Portuguese branch of Lightning Bolt and there stay here was arranged by one of the owners of the Rancho who works for the Dutch branch. They booked the whole Rancho for a photo shoot for their 2011 catalogue - so we had them exclusively - which was nice. There were about 13 in their group (from different countries) AND Rory Russell (surfboard shaper & surfing legend). Long and short? It was great fun! Reyn (the owner who lives in San Jose who brought me here) was here so that was super helpful and there were two Dutch guests, Roger & Fran, who had already been here for a month and were volunteering here at the Rancho. Roger & Fran were angels!!! I could not have managed here without them during that time! There were great company, superior help, and fun to be around! Thanks Roger & Franny!!!!
The night the Lightning Bolt crew left Reyn, Franny & Roger also left. That meant that I was the only one here for the rest of the day … well, except for the housekeeper & her helper and the cook who were here ‘til about 1:00. It was a lovely day and I laid around in the sun and read The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. No one got off the bus at 6 p.m. so I was alone for the night as well (except for the bus driver who keeps a room here at the Rancho). Then it began to rain … and to storm. There was lightning and thunder and a lot of darkness! So! I happened to get to a really scary part in the book just about the time the storm and darkness started. Horrors! That was one rough night! I did leave some outdoor lights on and I had the dog on the front porch of my house – but still! Oh! And that same night the Howler monkeys decided to have a howling contest right behind my house. It clearly sounded like the loser of the contest was debating the accuracy of the results and a heated argument quickly ensued. It was intense! I thought maybe the monkeys turned carnivorous all of a sudden. It was so horrendous sounding. Gasp! I decided to forge through the night with as much confidence as possible … which wasn’t much, but still more than I thought I had in me. It was actually kind of funny because the timing of it all was so crazy. Providence prevailed and I survived with all limbs intact.

Best of all Otto arrived safe and sound near the end of June but not without some drama. The plane Otto was taking from Frankfort had an engine explode while en route to Santo Domingo? Seriously! His plane had just left Frankfort and had been flying for only three minutes when there was an explosion! The plane shuddered and the passengers could see a fire in the engine on the right. The plane had to circle the airport for 20 minutes to use up the remaining fuel that was still in that engine and then safely landed with the passengers in ‘crash’ formation in their seats and a fire crew on the ground!!! Apparently, a bird caused the explosion. After four hours the passengers and their luggage were reboarded onto a new plane which touched down in San Jose at 10:00 after a brief stop in Santo Domingo to refuel and drop off passengers staying in the Dominican Republic.
Reyn picked Otto up at the airport and the two of them decided to stay the night in San Jose … Rein’s Rover needed it’s headlights fixed … no driving in the dark! After some ‘tranquilo Rein’ delay the guys finally (I have to say ‘finally’ because I was seriously missing Otto and wanted to see him – naturally) arrived at the Rancho about 5:00 p.m. on Friday. Wahoo!!!
Okay, so that was a bit more detail than I expected, so I’ve only just gotten done with June. Sigh … tranquilo!
