Our Rotterdam Domicile

Our VW camper ... the 'Full Dragon' ... so named because Otto was trying to tell me about the volkswagen and I kept thinking he was saying 'full dragon' (the accent thing you know?) so, the name has stuck! Otto can stand up in the camper which has a nice cooking area and he modified the sleeping area to accommodate his length.
Our building on Carel van Nieveltstraat. The door seen between the 2 cars is our outer door that we share with 5 other units. Ours is 23A and we are the 3 lower windows just to the right of the door. The window closest to the door is our 'sleeping room' (as they are called here) and the next 2 are in the Dining/Office area.
When you come in the outer door you go up the stairs and we are the door on the right. If you go downstairs we come to all the storage rooms. Each condo unit has their own locked storage room. The next floor up has two more condos and then there are 2 more on the next floor up.
A view of the kitchen looking into the entry room.
Our 'sleeping room' + surfboard. Otto's dad made the bed. There is a wood border all the way around the bed - the head and foot of the bed touch the walls as does the side where the window is. There is just enough room for the door to swing open and shut on the other side of the bed. This window faces East.

Our Rotterdam Domicile

One side of the kitchen showing the washing machine and the 'new' fridge!
Out the backdoor of the kitchen ... showing how the garden looked before I changed it ...
The park/walkway between the apartment buildings (maybe condo units is a better description as Otto owns our unit). On the right of the tree on the right is a doorway through the hedge that leads to our garden. This is on the West side of the building.
The big window is in the Living Room - the stairs lead to the kitchen ...
The garden 'in progress'... I moved the cement slabs to frame the garden below the hedge and the place the remaining pieces in the center. We are thinking about doing some raised beds but are not sure how much we want to establish before we leave for Costa Rica next summer. I did plant some leaf lettuce in the upper right quadrant that has already sprouted after only 4 days! It's continues to amaze me how growing seedlings can enhance a gardeners happiness! It's so thrilling! I also narrowed and extended the path out of the garden as per Otto's desire. The cement border pieces are too heavy for me to maneuver so Otto will replace them later.

Our domicile in Rotterdam

The kitchen which has a backdoor that leads to the garden. The cupboards came from IKEA (one of Lydia's favorite stores). The stove is fabulously top notch! 6 burners, large oven, gas control, and my favorite color combination for kitchen appliances - chrome and black! This room is sized for Otto who is, I believe, about 6'5". The counter heights are set to be comfortable for him so it is a little bit of an adjustment for me, but not a large one. Otto does a lot of the cooking so I'm happy that the room is comfortable for him. The fridge unit is in the kitchen and the freezer unit is in the storage room in the basement. Before I moved in he had a smaller fridge with a freezer attached. I had made a comment, while we were Skyping, about being shocked at it's size. I just couldn't believe someone could 'do' with something that little. Since then I have discovered that he goes to the store about every other day (there is one only 1 block away) and is therefore buying only what he needs for a couple of days. A little fridge was quite sufficient. However, during a conversation with a colleague at work, he encountered an opportunity to get a used unit as that fellow was remodeling and upgrading his kitchen. The 'new' pieces were in place when I arrived here. They are quite nice and very spacious.
Living room - window looks out into the garden; kitchen is located on the other side of the wall that the mirror is hanging on; the bundle of cloth hanging on the wall is one of the two hammocks that can be strung up in the room on either side of the couch.
The other side of the living room. Otto and his dad built the fireplace. 3 of Ot's surfboards.
View from the Dining Room into the Living Room. There are leaded glass sliding doors that separate the two rooms.
Other side of the Dining/Office Room. These windows face East and the street that our apartment is on.

More Cahuita

Oops...I guess I like this one! I seem to have posted it twice & I don't think I can delete just one photo from the group. Oh well. Thanks again Jessi for the FUN shades!
The ocean awaits ...oh, for those of you who might not know: Otto is holding one of his own creations - he made the surfboard!!! I got more 'water' lessons on this beach. I wanted to know how the currents flowed, as specifically as possible, when a wave was forming and when it crashed (of course there are many variables). Otto drew diagrams in the sand explaining the basics. It was quite interesting and was quite functional in that it alleviated some fear of the unknowns for me.

Another shot of the bungalows.
The mini kitchen unit! This was a new structure that was very convenient to have available. We bought groceries and thus were able to have simple breakfasts and lunches at the bungalow - mainly fresh fruits and veggies, coffee, and Imperial (Costa Rican beer).

The house on the left (in the background) is where the owner and his family live and the unit on the right was being rented by a man for a couple of months (it has a kitchen in it). The road and entrance to Bluspirit is behind the main house.

Cahuita - August 2009

Cahuita - Costa Rica: We stayed at a very nice place called Bluspirit Bungalows - run by a man named Tito and his wife. Otto and his family stayed here a couple of years ago when they were touring Costa Rica in celebration of his parent's 50th wedding anniversary. This is a view from the shoreline at this resort. This place didn't have a swimable beach but there were a few nearby. The one we liked was less than a 10 minute walk away.
Tito built this boat to take his guests (and others) on snorkeling and fishing tours. I love laundry shots! I've decided to start a portfolio of them.

Otto is taking a siesta at our bungolow which happened to be the last bungalow before the shoreline...so, we had a fantastic view of the ocean and continuous fresh breezes wafting unimpeded into our temporary domicile! And the sound of the rain on the metal roof was quite soothing.
Hmmm, just a photo of me walking ...

... and another of me checking my camera.

Special 'Tico' Greetings to 'A' & 'J'

Happy IMPERIALness from Costa Rica my beautiful 'Fairies'!!! Love 'C' & Otto!

Playa Cocles (near Puerto Viejo)

Otto going out for his first surf session at this location. The waves were small, but still a lot of fun. Ot spent some time teaching me about reading the currents in the water and a little bit about what to expect from them, how to handle getting caught in the rip tide, and how to begin body surfing...then I played in the salty waves. On this whole trip I think I was in the water as much as he was. It was wonderful! It was also great to have some cloudy weather to keep the potential for sun burning 'at bay'. After being in the ocean we'd walk across the street to 'The Totem' for some toast and cappuccinos.
We stayed at an acquaintance's home in Playa Cocles. Heinz is the only Doctor in the area. He has an office at his home, makes house calls, and travels to many clinics during the week. He's a very busy man and quite passionate about his work. He is originally from Argentina and his wife, Natasha, is from San Jose.

The view out one of the windows in the 'living' room where we slept.

Julian, Heinz & Natasha's son, getting more familiar with Otto on the patio that surrounds the house.

The gateway for the yard. We stayed here for 3 nights (I think-or maybe it was 4) and then it was time to move on ...

A quick sample of Costa Rica - August '09

Otto in Cahuita.
Otto in Cahuita Nature Preserve - right on the Atlantic Coast.

Charlotte in Cahuita - sunshine! The big ultra-groovy glasses were a gift from 'J'.

The rivers in Cahuita looked like 'no foam' lattes ... the photo doesn't do it justice (or maybe I just wasn't able to capture the soul of the jungle/river combination). It reminded me of my memories of being in Mexico when I was 3.

On exiting the USA - August 2009

I was startled awake by a flash of bright lights and not the alarm on my cell phone. I wondered who was being so self-absorbed that they forgot I was sleeping on the couch. I sat up, turned toward the kitchen and saw a beautiful angel who looked surprisingly like my son, the new daddy, Adrian. I had spent the night at his house so he could drive me to my plane. Apparently I failed to hear the alarm I set. Gasp! I now had 5 minutes before we had to leave for Traverse City's airport! Talk about a jolt! I find it amazing that a person can just throw themselves immediately to task after being abruptly awakened!

We got to the airport and I got checked in without incident. My girl friend, Michelle, met us there to see me off as well. After a few tearful hugs and kisses I went through security as my flight was scheduled to leave shortly. I boarded. And then I waited. All of us inside the plane waited. There was a severe thunderstorm going on and the plane was not allowed to leave the runway. We actually taxied out a couple of times but were told to turn back to the terminal for safety's sake - because of the weather. In my dozing state I believe I heard reports from the captain regarding the weight of the plane being to heavy for the weather conditions. I think that is why we did some additional cruising around the runway - to use up fuel so the plane would weigh less so we could take off when the barometric pressure lessened. Whether that was fact or fiction I have no idea. Regardless, we remained on terra firma for at least two extra hours!

When we finally arrived above the Detroit airport we began our descent only to be told to resume our circling of the facility as the skies were too crowded with vessels wanting to land. Now we had to wait in the sky! But only for a few minutes! When I got into the terminal I inquired as to the location of my next gate, which was with a different airline, as my flight was scheduled for departure within 30 minutes. I was horrified to hear that the airline I was utilizing to deliver me to Costa Rica was in another terminal altogether and that it would take me a minimum of 30 minutes just to get there. I would have to exit the building I was in and take an airport terminal shuttle to get me there. I was going to miss my flight!

Well, I've never missed a flight in my life! New experience! Scarey experience actually! I had to wait in an incredibly slow moving line for an attendant to re-book my flight. During the wait I mentally calmed myself down and prepared myself to handle this alteration. At first, like I said, it felt scarey. Scarey because I've never had to deal with this kind of situation before. There were a lot of 'what-ifs' that wanted to insist that the process was impossible, expensive, and damned inconvenient! I had to focus on creating a peaceful scenario for myself and then assuring myself that I could 'be' there. It's one thing to tell yourself that there is nothing to worry about when you are not in a situation that might encourage it and quite another to be in a situation to which you have been conditioned to believe is 'awful' and then find peace there. I knew it was do-able and so ... I did it.

The next hiccup occurred when the Booking Attendant heard my request, checked her computer, displayed an expression of shock and exclaimed, "That's weird! There aren't any more flights out of Detroit today that have available seats!" Remember that it is by now only 8:30 in the morning. She told me I'd have to spend the day AND night in Detroit and fly out the following day!!! "No. Thanks not acceptable. There is something there for me - an upgrade, another airline, re-routing through another city, varying times of day... check again," I told her.
She kept checking and shaking her head. Every now and then she'd say, "How strange!" And I kept assuring her that there was no WAY I was spending the next 24 hours in Detroit and that I WOULD be arriving in Costa Rica today!! Somehow there was a way and she would find it! Eventually she did.

Originally I was flying to Detroit to Charlotte, NC arriving in San Jose at 1:00 p.m. The 'enhanced' (one can always choose to believe that all things happen for a beneficial purpose) itinerary became: waiting 4 more hours in Detroit & continuing to Charlotte, NC where I would need to get another boarding pass and then fly on to Atlanta, GA. In Atlanta I again change airlines and thus get, yet another boarding pass, for the flight to San Jose arriving at 9:30 p.m.
While still in Detroit I tried to get ahold of Otto to let him know of the changes. I had the number of the hotel he was staying at so I called them but was unable to reach Otto. Then I called Ot's best friend, Reinaldo, who lives in San Jose and asked him if he would try to contact Otto and have him call me. He said he would. Otto called me, but not because Reinaldo had reached him. He called because he thought I was waiting in the airport in Charlotte, NC and wanted to talk to me one last time before I landed in San Jose. Delightful! I arrived in San Jose without further interruption. But I wouldn't be allowed to leave Costa Rica for Holland without another 'flight-mare' experience (as my girl friend Evie so aptly described it). Details to follow on another day.

yet one more 'blossom' ...

Kim (Luke's girlfriend) another sweety acting like one of my own kids!!!
